Sheffield Wednesday 1 Burnley 2

By Burnley FC
August 10 2013

DANNY Ings made it a ‘magnificent seven’ and Sam Vokes opened his account for the season as Clarets survived a second half onslaught at Hillsborough.

Ings’ header midway through the first half saw the striker register a goal in the seventh successive game, including a productive pre-season.

And when striker partner Vokes grabbed his first goal of the season soon after, Sean Dyche’s men put crucial daylight between themselves and Wednesday.

David Prutton replied with a second half header to set up a nervy finish at Hillsborough.

But after a dogged and magnificent rearguard, Burnley survived an aerial onslaught to record a terrific victory to build on the opening day draw at home to Bolton.

The Clarets were unchanged for the third successive game, with the only change coming on the bench, where fit-again Ben Mee replaced Luke O'Neill.

But it was the hosts who had the livelier start, with shots narrowly off target by Helan and Antonio.

Looking to be a great start for us, made even sweeter with rovers losing at home, more so as it was such a late one for them to concede. Convinced we'll pick up all three points next week to keep us right up there. Brilliant !!!

A game of three halves... first 20 mins all Sheffield... flying like greyhounds out of the traps

next 25 minutes Burnley dominant and score 2 comfortably

And then most of second half backs against the wall against the constant ball into the box, the ball over the top, the pushes, the shoves, the elbows in faces...

and an utterly heroic Burnley performance...they caved in just the once and then we sat through a display that was brave, defiant, courageous, some astonishing last ditch tackles and blocks in the six yard box... Heaton commanding, Shackell, Long superb... Marney and Vokes outstanding...

it was draining for us as we sat at the end we were defending in the 2nd half... so what it must have been like for them...

I just really hope people stop moanIng and groaning and stop talking shite now.

FFS, all is well, ENJOY IT, let's get behind them.

All I've read is doom and gloom but as I said, as the Season was about to start, I'm FAR more content at the Start of this Season than I was at the start of last. Even when Austin left it didnt really bother me (would
sooner have him but I was in the 'we must sell' camp).

Weve a good manager, far better than that clown Howe and he seems to know what he's doing (unlike Howe) despite having far, far less money. So it means it's just gonna take longer but so be it. Shame we didn't get him after Laws rather than that clueless melt but so be it - it is what it is.

We're better off now than a year ago, without doubt and the longer Dyche is here the more he will mould it.

Who's gonna score the goals now Dande recently said after Austin left. Well, as myself and BC said, under this manager we might only need to score one in most games to win as he actually knows what he's doing and we are tough to score against.

Ings isn't as good as Eagles and doesn't have the goals/assists aggi recently said - I'll say it again, Ings is way ahead in talent terms than Eagles ever was at any point in his time with us and it's not his fault he has had two years ruined with cruciates. He's class and that goal today was more than class, jumping and bundling over centre backs to score with a header - 7 in 7 for him and all he needed was a chance.

So important it was Austin that left this Summer and not Ings - was so worried at Howes interest a month or so back.

We'd get more for Ings than Austin now.

Noone else scores posters have said, well that's about 5 different scorers already.

A stunning pre-Season followed by 3 in 3 quality results and displays since the Season started.

Hundreds moaning about 'long ball Dyche' on CM someone said - where is this long ball?

People moaning on HERE and that helmet Greaves in Telegraph as recently as earlier this week moaning that Tripps quality crosses now go to waste with no Austin. Anyone seen both goals today?

Wallace has had a bad to Season I keep reading - same old average player who doesn't assist - well he certainly assisted today.

Both strikers on the scoresheet and Vokes getting better markings than Ings!

We have a good manager, ten times what we thought we were stuck with a year ago.
Were in great form over both pre-Season and since.
Were still strong at the back.
Were scoring.
We've a great, great starting 11 (I'll admit not much after that, tho we've enough) an all we need is the luck of 08'09 where we has a settled side all Season.

Just feels like people want to constantly find something else to moan at then when the next game comes they have to find something else as they keep getting proven to be taking pants. ENJOY and back them!

You feeling reasonably content DT then?

Fred went yesterday, I wanted to but whereas the position of our Club at the moment really pleases me (compared to 12 months ago), the 'doom and gloom' depressing fans who talk shite send me under.

Think that's why I stayed away.

People just have lost all sense in the last few years.

I genuinely think, for who we are, were lucky to have this Manager and this 'eleven' and we just need to start backing them and, so long as he isn't poached, let Dyche spend as many years as he needs to getting us right.

Well said MH, my thoughts exactly, although I must add that I also said Ings for Pato was a big plus, which is turning out to be correct.
Of course it's not perfect, we still have problems but in general, with this manager, we're in a far, far better position than you'd ever believe from reading the incessant moaning, whingeing and criticism that's been a feature of the msgboards all summer.

But the moaners won't have gone away, one bad game, one bad result, which will inevitably happen, and they'll be back, they'll be kicking off again. I'm not sure what it is, maybe the PL season, but so many fans these days seem to have lost their grip on reality and expect us to be challenging for promotion every season. We lost our best chance first season back down, now Dyche and the current first team is as good as we can expect IMO, but not for a lot of fans it seems.

Great result but we shouldn't get carried away just yet, an injury or suspension to any of our front two and we're bolloxed.

I still don't think Vokes will prove to be the answer but I'm hoping he'll prove me wrong. Good squad player, good option from the bench, not sure about starting eleven

Otherwise it's looking good, the first eleven looks very competitive and any replacements are adequate and will do a job.

We still need that striker though and I'm confident we'll have one in before the window closes, despite what he-who-claims-to-know-everything says.

Is he really a good option from the bench? I haven't seen anything of him but for me whoever comes off the bench needs to be able to change a game either in attack, midfield or defence, is he a game changer?

The negativity on here has been aimed towards the board for not backing Dyche, who all of us on here, I think, are behind.

There's been some negativity towards Dyche on CM, particularly at the back end of last season. If I remember rightly 70% wanted him gone per some poll they did.

The difference on here compared to that board during the summer was amazing. Some of them spent there time from April to August criticising everything they could think of.
Most people on here seemed to recognise we could still do with a couple more players but were quite optimistic about it.

Yes content with Dyche and the 15 or so players we have who are good Championship players...

but not content with a dual chairmanship... one of whom said in the summer we have no need to sell... and one who wrote in the prog that we "can really go for it this season" whilst simultaneously selling a 30-goal a season man...

and having sold Charlie for well less than £4million (I suspect) is reluctant to disclose the fee for fear of criticism...

Teasdale In!
11/08/2013 19:56
The dual chairmen was/is a terrible idea. From the start we've had and the comments (especially from Garlick about funds being available) Dyche deserves backing now to strengthen this squad.

I won't be holding my breath on the chuckle brothers delivering this though. Maybe Clive Holt will actually contribute something!?

There's no yes or no answer to that question soapy, but I remember when he was here on loan a couple of seasons ago when he came on as a 2nd half sub at Hull. We were 2-0 down with 12 minutes to go and won 3-2 almost entirely due to Vokes flick-ons from headers he won.

So he can change a game, but he won't do it every week.

To be fair to Vokes most of his career appears to have been spent on bench or out on loan.

Maybe an extended run will give him that extra confidence to bag some goals like the one yesterday. Always thought he's been a decent player for us.

Few decent comments here and id like to bring them together. Certainly not getting "carried away" LC, I feel no different now than I did around the Sparta game 2/3 weeks ago - I was happy then and im still happy now and the sale of Austin hasnt really bothered me and still felt we would be OK (but we do need another decent striker). Important to stress that whatever striker comes in (even Sharp) would have to make do with the bench for now though. As TI said, Vokes has waited maybe 5 years for this chance, now he has it, Dyche said theres a chance for someone there now and to be fair to the lad he has taken it - even if we signed a Wells for £2M id say its the bench...for now. What kind of man would Dyche be to say that then drop Vokes. He has got better ratings than Ings so far, had his Manager and opposing fans drooling over him as a target man, scored and made goals. Then theres Ings, 7 in 7 now, not bad for someone withot a brain (Dande) and someone who cant score like Eagles (aggi) - THAT goal on saturday was his best yet for us though...just watch it again..the lad is pure class (a younger, fitter Robbie Blake) bt I never knew he had the 'balls' to score a goal like that (spesh with two @#$%& knees, small frame etc etc etc).

Something ive been saying for a while seems to be 'sticking' now too. We DO have a small squad when you take out the unwwanted and unuseable players, however, we DO have a great starting eleven and decent cover (bar in the sriker department). That elevn will do us fine and we just need luck, if we get loads of injuries like we have done in the past were screwed, if we get loads of reds and bans like last Season were screwed also but if we get the rub of the green like in the last Promotion Season we could do very well - thats in the lap of the Gods though....but I do have a good feeling for it all at the moment.

So long as we can get the luck on bans/injuries the we are better off with a small, all-competing squad than one of Master Eddies arks.

DT mentioned he is happy with the manager and, at last, I feel we have a winner here...he also mentioned 15 players. Maybe thats about right when you take the sh1te out - ideally we would like 18, maybe 20...then trust our homegrown to fill in on the bench when needs be.

We had that luck in 08'09 on injuries and suspensions and pretty much played the same eleven all Season:
Jensen
Williams/Duff Caldwell Carlisle Jordan/Kalvanes
Elliott Alexander McCann
Eagles Paterson Blake
...with noteable metions for both Thompson and Gudjonsson who must have played some part in nearly every single game.

Where we are at now (just hoping we ge that same luck again five years on):
Heaton
Trippier Long Shackell Mee
Wallace Marney Jones Stanislas
Ings Vokes
...with back-up:
GK: Cisak(+2)
RB: ONeill Edgar
LB: Lafferty Edgar
CD: Duff Edgar
CM: Arfield Edgar
Wings: Arfield Treacy
Strikers: Noble
Thats 19 players with the first eleven and back-up. The board must back Dyche now, he deserves it (ill agree with TI there), with a decent striker signing as Noble alone isnt enough.....as shown.

That would do though IMO and should we be able to release Stock, Bartley, Mills and Porter from the roster then maybe there could be further additions.

People are playing 'catch up' on the likes of you, me and BC - where we feel now, they will need a few more results - they are where we were around the Sparta game.

Who have we got to come in say if we get unlucky with a few early injuries or suspensions? No youth team players look ready yet and there's not much left in terms of quality in the rest of the squad.

Dyche has shifted loads out this summer to free up wages. The time to strengthen is when you are on a good run. Lets hope the chairmen have learnt their lesson from last season.

I'll be really impressed if you can find anywhere where I said that.

I agree, I think we've got a decent first XI. A real lack of strength in depth though and just hoping we don't get any injuries seems a bit optimistic.

My issue though is more with how the club is being run, there just doesn't seem to be much ambition there.

I wasn't too fussed by us selling Austin, it was fairly inevitable. But coming out and saying we can't compete with the clubs receiving parachute payments (whilst we are still receiving parachute payments) doesn't fill me with hope.

Similarly, surely the sale of Austin didn't come as a surprise to the club, you'd think we'd have looked at the scenarios and sounded out a few players.

I'm also concerned that the noises seem to be that we're not looking at reinvesting an element of the Austin money. Although we certainly need experienced pros like Jones, if we're planning to keep afloat we also need to be looking at taking on good younger players who may develop into our next saleable assets (unpalatable as that may be to some).

I think our recent history has shown that there's little point in picking up players like Noble and hoping that they'll magically come good. If you want a decent return then generally it requires a decent investment.

Maybe it's just that we need a new PR department but I fear for the direction the club is going.

In the next few years we're going to lose the parachute payments and we're going to have to find the money to repay the principal on buying back the Turf.

We're either going to have to keep on selling players for good fees or get promoted sooner rather than later. Other than that I can't see anything but a slow decline.

Loving it MH - I guess this is your shot at redemption after your Owen Coyle rant just before he only went on to get us promoted.

I used to have a mate who pulled a different bird every single weekend. He wasn't great looking, didn't really have the chat but he played the dartboard theory, you know throw enough arrows and eventually you'll hit bullseye.

Still let me go on record. I'm still not 100% convinced about Dyche. I like that he's looking like proving me wrong and I hope he continues to make me look like a 'div'. I was optimistic when he arrived, a little concerned by the end of the season but pre season and a couple of games so far have got me feeling more and more confident we can avoid the drop this season and maybe even be comfortable top 10 - which would be a decent outcome with our budget.

In terms of the team, the addition of Jones into midfield makes a massive difference and it looks like we've improved on Grant between the sticks. People keep telling me it is a strong first 11 but I'm not sure. It is a decent first 11 with a couple of very good players amongst it (don't forget the window ain't shut yet, don't be amazed to see Trippier gone before the end of August & a decent chance of Ings gone in January if he carries on) but strong? I guess it depends on your interpretation but I don't think our first 11 looks like a top 8 first 11. Like Dyche. I'm hoping they prove me to be spectacularly wrong.

You've surprised me there Longsiders, I thought you were, like me, perfectly content with Dyche as manager. I know there were a few dodgy home performances earlier this year which seem to have caused a breakout of mass hysteria on CM, but I fully expected us to progress again under Dyche this season, whereas you seem to have lost faith altogether and are now hoping he proves you wrong. I'll be proved wrong if we're bottom half.

And you're more and more confident we can avoid the drop ? You're not the only one worried about relegation but I continue to be amazed at this. Why on earth anyone thinks that the team with the 2nd best defence in the league, and that has lost just 3 of it's last 14 league games is going to be relegated is way beyond me.

Just being pessimistic BC. I wasn't over impressed with some of the football towards the end of last year but I think a lot of my relegation fears were more about the club and budget than the manager. I probably am happier than I sound with Dyche, and as I say so far his signings, dealings and start to the season make my worries look more and more silly with every passing game.

Agreed on the timing LC, Dyche definitely deserves the time to work.
