Play Offs And The Best And Worst Of Our Season

How anyone ever doubted the wisdom of the play-offs is beyond me. They provide three of the best sporting climaxes of the season, and a whole lot of excitement for twelve clubs and twelve sets of fans on the way.

One year and one week on from the day that Burnley won promotion to the Premier League, I was back at Wembley to see which of the League One finalists would be joining us in the Championship. Yes, in case you hadn't heard, Burnley got relegated, so next season it's back to some of our old and more familiar stamping grounds, and bye-bye Stamford Bridge, Old Trafford, the Emirates and Ewood.

My 52nd birthday - the day we beat Sheffield United to get to the top flight - was one of the best days of my life, and the season following Burnley one of the best seasons of my life, despite its conclusion.

First though, a little story to dispel the hard-man image that has the new government scared to field a minister to face me on Question Time.

It WASN'T wisdom that created the play offs-that honour belongs to the yanks-it was greed!

I for one don't agree with the play offs,it should be a 46 game season where the best 2/3 teams are promoted.

the problem with the top 3 team goong up is by easter most clubs wouldnt have anything to play for, making matches boring and predictable

I think the play offs are great, as BBC says, keeps the season alive till the end. Maybe they should bring em in for relegation too. (Sm85)

I agree with both promotion and relegation playoffs. yes, they make moneey for the FA, but if we were to worry about that then we would not attend ANY game EVER. You simply have to accept the commercial forces in play within the game right now or the monies involved would drive you crazy.

As for a pure footballing spectacle, well, it's just great the highs the lows, we've suffered them both but that's what nakes the game so great. It also gives teams likes us and more recently Blackpool a shot at the big time when we might not ordinarliy have got there.
