For a few brief moments, our hopes rose that the rain might get so heavy that the game would have to be abandoned. It was all we had left. It was a horrible Lancashire day that got more horrible on and off the pitch once kick-off came around. The foul weather became our one little ray of sunshine.

Steady rain turned to a deluge and by the time the players came out for the second half, with Burnley trailing 5-0, and journalists looking to the "record defeat" section of the programme, puddles were beginning to form.

I was hoping Brian Laws had changed the "get the ball to Eagles" instruction to "get the ball into that 15 yard by 15 yard patch in the City half close to the Bob Lord stand, under-hit short passes to each other, which get slowed by the standing water, then surround referee Alan Wiley and persuade him that the pitch is unplayable."
