Roberto Martinez, Swansea City's manager is making quite a name for himself since stepping into the hot seat after the departure of Kenny Jackett in 2007, leading them to promotion to the Championship last year. Good news for Burnley was that Jason Scotland had dropped to the bench, the 29 goals Scotland scored last season helped Swansea City to the Championship, and the hitman was ironically sold to Swansea by Owen Coyle.  Swansea started the game like the proverbial "House on fire", getting down the wings and sending crosses over, to no avail as Burnley cleared their lines with ease. The first shot in anger almost went out for a throw in from Darren Pratley who swung his foot and sent the ball well wide. Burnley's first corner on 5 mins, saw the ball swung into the box which was full of Clarets, defended easily by Swansea, but captain Steve Caldwell took a kick to the head and spent a good few minutes on the sidelines. Much to the anger of the home supporters who also took great pleasure in taunting Steven Thompson and his Cardiff City past. 

Burnley won their first free kick on 18 minutes courtesy of Steven Thompson who was dragged to the ground by Shaun McDonald. The ball was flighted over to Clark Carlisle, Swansea yet again got the ball away only to Jordan on the edge of the box who let fly with a half volley, which ended up five yards wide, great opportunism from Jordan. 

On 23 minutes another free kick this time for a foul on Elliott, Burnley fashioned a chance, a cross to the back post was headed on for Paterson to half connect, unfortunately straight at De Vires. Orlandi for Swansea was booked for a foul on Anderson, 30 seconds later the ref who seemed to favour the home side early on booked Burnley’s Steven Jordan. Orlandi would have won at least silver in the Olympics for his dive at the edge of Burnley's box on 25 minutes, should really have received another yellow, and consequentially a red, only for the ref to bottle it!

Clarke Carlisle "took" a booking when the Swansea forward Darren Pratley was making serious inroads toward the Burnley goal, the free kick coming to nothing. Chris McCann’s 20 yard left footer at least made the Swansea keeper make a save but was still a very even match with the ref getting more and more involved. 44 minutes in and Alexander and McCann have the chance with a free kick 25 yards away from goal, but it was Wade Elliott to lift it towards the run of Clarke Carlisle, only for it to be cleared.  

 Halt time arrived and the main thought would have been that Burnley's front two, seemed to be losing out to Swansea's defence as Burnley were pushed back and using the long ball more and more, Paterson and Thompson are working their socks off, but getting no joy in the first half. 0-0 at half time, Jenson not troubled and Burnley's defence holding their own. 

The second half started with Kevin McDonald who was on a yellow card being replaced by Joey Gudjonsson and Shaun MacDonald replaced by former Leeds youngster Mark Gower.  Mark Gower’s entrance on the pitch as a substitute was not given to the referee, and subsequently booked Martinez for not telling the Referee about the substitution, or was it Gower for being on the pitch unannounced? Who knows funny things happen at Swansea. 

Another back post header on 64 minutes this time by Thompson which gave De Vries no real problems, Wade Elliott is giving a real performance, and the Swansea right back a torrid time.

 Steven Caldwell who had earlier been kicked in the head, this time was the recipient of a late tackle leaving him grounded; Caldwell won’t forget this brusing game. Luckily for Burnley who had no defenders on the bench Caldwell was ok to continue.

 The referee, who was called a "Homer" from 2br after the first 10 minutes, continued to call fouls on the Burnley players, but was reluctant to show yellow cards to the Welsh team.  Swansea substitute, Jason Scotland appeared on the pitch on the 70th minute, to rapturous applause, the Swansea talisman was someone for Burnley to worry about, a natural goalscorer, and one man in the white of Swansea who could break Burnley’s resistance. 

Robbie Blake was Owen Coyle’s answer to Scotland, Coyle looking for Blake who took Martin Paterson’s place to hold the ball up and use his skilful way to fashion a second goal to put the game to bed. Jensen was made to tip a shot around the post in the 73rd minute, and with the resulting corner hitting the bar, Jason Scotland’s arrival had ignited Swansea, Burnley in a game with the last 20 minutes against a revitalised Swansea City.

Steven Thompson who was replaced by Alan Mahon left to boo's from the Swans, who are very unforgiving to his Bluebirds past. Blake was now playing as a lone striker with Mahon on the left and Elliott on the right with a central midfield of McCann and goalscorer Gudjonsson, with Alexander slotting in behind. Espanyol loanee Gomez went close late on with a free kick, and Burnley's back four were pushed further back as Swansea threw everything a Burnley looking for an elusive equaliser.

 Jensen even had the Burnley fans hiding their eyes, when he came out and spilled the ball, luckily Burnley's new found resistance cleared the ball, as 2BR were praying that this referee would not give a dubious penalty, and were also amazed when the fourth official held up 4 minutes time added on, and with the time running out Steven Jordan miss jugged the ball to allow Ferrie Bodde to grab a equalizer, it was a shame after a great team performance that a mistake cost Burnley two valuable points.

 Deserved or not, Burnley would have taken a draw before the game, It’s the manor of the equalizing goal that sticks in the throat. 

The next league game see’s another Lancashire derby with highflying Preston the visitors to Turf Moor, before that there is the chance for the Clarets to claim a cup scalp facing Fulham at home on Tuesday.
