Burnley progressed to Round Three of the Carling Cup tonight when they beat Lancashire rivals Oldham Athletic by 3 goals to 0 in front of a crowd of 5,528. Athletic fans, just over 1500 of them, travelled to the Turf and certainly made themselves heard throughout the game.
For tonight's game Owen Coyle fielded a full strength Burnley team, and it certainly proved to be the right choice as they beat Athletic for the second successive season by 3-0. The Clarets put up a good display, and for the second game running managed to keep a clean sheet. The goalscorers were McCann with a header in the 12th minute, then a brace from Paterson in the 63rd and 79th. Paterson now has 5 goals to his credit this season and looks set, if he can maintain this form to become one of the Championship's top scorers. Let's all hope we can take this form forward into the League games.
The 3rd round draw is on Saturday lunchtime and The Clarets will be looking for a favourable draw, remember there are no seedings at this stage so we could draw anybody big or small.
