Rugby continues at The Mennaye Penzance on June 11th when the Pirates Amateurs entertain the Coldstream Guards in memory of one of their fallen – Lance Corporal Darren Hicks - a Pirates Amateurs player

Darren Hicks a product of the Pirates Mini-Junior Section, led the Pirates Amateurs to victory at St. Just on 27 th September 2008 prior to departing for a military tour to Afghanistan as a Lance Corporal in the 1st Battalion Coldstream Guards

Sadly in February this year (2010) he was killed whilst on foot patrol in Afghanistan

The memorial match will be a fitting tribute to Darren and an opportunity to recognise the work done by the Military in often remote and dangerous places.

It won’t all be doom and gloom though, as a barbecue and other treats will be laid on for what should be a large crowd from far and wide.

Pirates Amateurs

The side has been existence for three years, and is made up wholly of amateur players, young and old, whose only wish is to play and enjoy their rugby.

Having topped the CRFU's Official 2nd and 3rd XV Merit Table One this season, the Penzance & Newlyn RFC 'Amateurs' applied to be admitted into the newly constituted Cornwall League for next season.

An application for league status had been made before, but was not given backing through the Cornwall RFU. the hierarchy of the Cornwall RFU appeared unsupportive.

Finally at the beginning of May this year they were finally admitted into the league by a 16 to 9 majority vote

At the recent Pirates Ams and Colts awards evening Paul Greaves and others gave some details about this event. It's going to be quite an evening, with the rugby followed by a charity auction and barbecue. A large crowd is expected and a chance to show our respect for Darren and all his fallen colleagues as well as those still serving in that deadly theatre.
Darren's family have insisted that some of the funds raised will go to the Pirates Ams because that is what Darren would have wanted; but supporting the service personnel and their families is, without doubt, the most important point of the event.

Theres a real buzz about the match and a lot of interest.

As a player for the Amateurs it will be great to see everyone there.

Best bet is to be there well in time for a 7pm k.o and if it's 7.30 then, well, time for another beer (or two?).
Looking forward to some live rugby me, Maid can't wait to see the Coldstream Guards - will they be in uniform she asks?

An entertaining game played in a true rugby spirit won comfortably by the Pirate amateurs but the result didn't matter on an evening like this.
A fantastic turn out of at least 1000 people and it was great to see the Mennaye on a sunny evening looking so good and a fitting tribute by the people of Penzance & Newlyn to Darren and these other brave men and I hope it brought some comfort to his family and friends.
Well done everyone involved in the organisation of this match.

Agree with all that - the crowd may well have been pushing 2000, brilliant turnout. Great effort by Scott and all the others who worked so hard to put on such a fitting tribute.
