Pertemps Bees have pulled off a major coup by signing Gloucester's long-serving lock Mark Cornwell as their new captain for next season. Cornwell, 33, has just completed ten years of loyal service with Gloucester which they have rewarded with the award of a Testimonial this season.
He is expected to remain involved with Gloucester in a player development role but has decided to continue his playing career at Sharmans Cross Road.
"We're very excited about signing Mark," said Phil Maynard, Pertemps Bees' director of rugby. "It's like signing a Super-14 player because of the experience he has.
"We see this as a major signing. He's played in the top league in the country for ten years, he's also played for England A but he has still got a lot of enthusiasm for playing the game.
"We believe that he is the sort of player that we can build a team around and he will have a very important role to play for us next season, on and off the pitch.
"We have been in talks for several weeks and we are delighted that he has now signed for us. He has strong leadership skills and he will take over the captaincy when he arrives at the club in the summer."
Cornwell, who joined Gloucester from his local club Old Richians, has played more than 180 first team games for Gloucester. He made his 100th Premiership appearance in the 2002/03 season.
His imending arrival at Sharmans Cross Road strengthens Pertemps Bees' close links with Gloucester. Last season fly-half Ryan Lamb and number eight Luke Narraway enjoyed loan spells with Pertemps Bees from the Premiership club.
This season England sevens international Will Matthews and Lamb, the fly-half in England's Under-21 Six Nations-winning squad, were on loan with Pertemps Bees.
