The continuing renaissance of Birmingham & Solihull Rugby Club has been further underlined by the formation of a second XV, with a number of fixtures confirmed against local clubs.The Bees, whose first team play in National League 2 North and also feature a thriving Mini & Junior section, have been planning the return of senior amateur rugby at its Portway home as part of its on—going strategy of strengthening the Club’s playing base.Under the direction of Bees'’ Director of Rugby Eugene Martin, a Development Squad has been formed with Clive Chapman named as Lead Coach. Tony Skehan and Mike Williams will also be adding their vast experience and knowledge on the coaching front. From this squad of players, a number of second XV fixtures will be played this season

 

“This is a very significant development for the Club as a whole, as it gives young players who have come through our junior sides – but have no particular aspirations to play first team rugby – an opportunity to continue enjoying playing in a Bees’ shirt” said Lead Coach, Clive Chapman.

He added, “Second XV fixtures will also provide further opportunities for first team squad players not currently playing league rugby to get some important game time under their belts and, in doing so, provide healthy competition for first team places”.

The move is expected to attract back a number ex players who may have left the club for new pastures due to a lack of opportunity to play senior rugby at an amateur level.

Echoing Clive’s sentiments, Bees’ Director of Rugby Eugene Martin welcomed the announcement of the new Development Squad/second XV set up. “There is now an opportunity for players of all ages and abilities to play rugby at the Bees. We are already seeing the benefits of bringing young talent through our ‘pyramid’ – such as Matt Spink who is now a first team regular. This latest move will continue the momentum that is now very evident throughout the Club and is a direct result of a lot of hard work by many of the unsung heroes who have made this happen.”
