Liverpool star tells Benitez to strengthen

Liverpool's Xabi Alonso has stated that he expects manager Rafael Benitez, will strengthen the squad in the January transfer window, to help compensate for Liverpool’s poor start to the Premiership campaign. Already 17 points behind league leaders Chelsea, after suffering a heavy defeat at their hands on Sunday, Liverpool seem to lack a cutting edge, and have been branded boring and completely negative in many corners.

While that extreme view may be harsh, there is little arguing the fact that Liverpool, so far this season have only one win and at times looked as likely to score as a Hells Angel at a Nun convention.

But speaking to the clubs official website Alonso thinks January will be the time to sort out these problems:

"We are trying to use all the options we have at the moment, but I think you can see we still need a little more.

"All we can do is wait until the transfer window opens again in January. Until then we must start winning as soon as possible because we are not in a comfortable position.

"I think it's better not to look at the league table at this moment. We must keep our focus and try to think only about our next Premiership match against Blackburn, but it's difficult for us with the international games coming up now."

"It was so disappointing for us and a painful defeat.

"I thought we did well against them in the last game, but the mistakes we have made cost us goals this time.

"The difference between the two teams is how comfortably they defend. They play well on the counter attack and they win a lot of games because other teams make mistakes against them. That's why they have a lot of success.

You still have to wonder though, whether, someone at Liverpool is now regretting letting Owen slip through their hands.
