Spurs and Newcastle United could be getting set to go head to head to capture Barcelona striker Javier Saviola, who has been told he is no longer required at Barcelona. Barca confirmed yesterday that they were willing to loan the player out, and the Spanish press immediately, named Newcastle as a possible destination, but this morning Spurs have entered the frame as competition for the Argentine.

Barcelona's sporting director Txiki Beguiristain, refused to confirm which clubs are involved saying:

"He did well for Barcelona but in the current side we have players who offer more. We are well covered in every type forward.

"He won't get the chance to play here and at his age he should be playing.

"We are in contact with a number of clubs to find the best deal for the club and the player."

But the Spanish press are convinced that if it is to be a loan deal, Barcelona would prefer for the player to move abroad, and the best bet at the moment would appear to be the Premiership.
