Juventus five points clear

A five point lead has now opened up at the top of Serie A. Two goals by Alessandro Del Piero and Marcelo Zalayeta were enough to see of AS Roma last night. Juventus are now unbeaten in eight matches and are top with 22 points 5 points ahead of rivals AC Milan and an unlikely Lecce two points again further back in third.

It was of course a homecoming of sorts with Fabio Capello returning to the club he walked out on in the summer to take charge of Juventus, but in truth Roma looked a pale shadow of the sides he had created during his five years in Rome. Luigi Del Neri's side are 9th in Serie A, some 13 points behind Juventus and will do well to get anything out of this season at all.

It wasn’t a good night for flowing football though, both sides struggled to come to terms with the heavy rain, but when Del Piero hit the back of the net for the home side following a 25 yard drive from Mauro Camoranesi the game looked to be in little doubt.

An offside goal by striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic followed in the 40th minute, just before Roma went close to an equaliser.
Zalayeta who came on for the substituted Del Piero took just 2 minutes to double the lead, the only downside to Juve’s performance on the night was the second yellow that saw the former Roma man
