Gillingham have rejected the chance to sign former Manchester United winger Andrei Kanchelskis. The former Russian international was released by Rangers in the summer and is desperate to stay in the Britain.

At Man Utd, Kanchelsksis was a fans favourite with his fast direct running before leaving for Everton where he was less successful. From there he moved to Rangers where he caused havoc with his pace until losing his place.

His agents have been scouring the English and Scottish leagues for clubs for Kanchelskis and 1st Division football was targeted. Speaking to the clubs official site, Gills boss Andy Hessenthaler reveals why he turned the chance down. "I was asked whether he could train with us. But I didn't agree to it becuase there was no point, as there would not be anything here for him.

It just shows the type of player who is currently out of work.

Names have come up of good players who can't get clubs. It's not a good situation, but that is the way the game is at the moment."
