Openers Darren Robinson and Will Jefferson put on 118 as the visitors eased to a respectable 153 for one at lunch. But Derbyshire bounced back to take nine wickets in the afternoon session as Essex's promotion express came off the rails in spectacular style.

A frantic first day was not finished there though, as Derbyshire lost three quick wickets to finish the day on 89 for three - a deficit of 179 runs.

Robinson and Jefferson opened superbly, with all but 13 of Robinson's 69 runs coming from boundaries as Derbyshire's bowlers dropped far too short on a number of occasions. Jefferson was more circumspect, but he developed a liking for Tom Lungley as the medium-pacer struggled to contain a bright Essex start.

The pair had barely been troubled before Mathew Dowman surprised Robinson with a quicker short ball which found the edge on the way through to wicketkeeper Luke Sutton. John Stephenson joined Jefferson to add another 35 before lunch, but Lungley's dismissal of Stephenson for 20 shortly after the resumption - the veteran nicking one to Sutton - was to herald a flurry of wickets.

Jefferson (59) was yorked by Mohammad Ali in the very next over and Essex failed to find another durable partnership as medium-pacer Graeme Welch finished with figures of three for 34. Captain Ronnie Irani (six) nicked one to Dowman at a wide second slip, Ravinder Bopara (11) edged to Sutton and Ashley Cowan also top-edged a catch behind attempting an extravagant late cut.

Only James Middlebrook offered any meaningful resistance in the Essex tail, making a dogged 40 before hoisting Ali to Chris Bassano at long-on to bring the innings to a close.

The Derbyshire batsmen would have been hoping to negotiate the final session of the day with the minimum of damage, but instead Essex quickly had them struggling at 32 for three. Cowan took one for eight in his opening five-over burst, luring Australian dangerman Michael Di Venuto into a rash cut which carried to wicketkeeper Andy Flower off a bottom edge.

Irani trapped Andrew Gait in front of his stumps two balls later, and Dowman made the situation worse driving Graham Napier to Middlebrook in the gully. But Bassano batted sensibly to finish the day two runs short of his half-century and Steve Selwood defended stoutly on the way to making an unbeaten 12.
