Leeds were made to work hard for their second victory of the season, and the 3-0 scoreline flattered us somewhat, but the three points are what counts . The first half was a dour affair, with neither side lifting above the distinctly average. Poor decision making, and wayward passing led to the first 40 minutes dragging along as neither team looked capable of breaking the other down. Coventry if anything, had more of the ball, but never really tested Sullivan in the Leeds goal. 5 minutes to the break, Leeds scored the goal that the game was desperately crying out for, and it came from an unlikely source. Jermaine Wright, who went on to to play probably his best game for Leeds, floated in a free kick, and Clarke Carlisle rose to loop in a header past Shearer in the City goal.

Leeds came out for the second half, with a bit more about them, with Pugh instrumental in most of their good attacking play. Richardson was also causing problems down the right flank, as the two widemen showed the form they have displayed most of this season. Leeds needed a second goal, and eventually it came. Pugh played a lovely cushioned volley into the area, and Wright powered in a header. Shearer couldn’t hold, and ex Coventry player Joachim put home the rebound, It was the first goal by a forward this term, and the relief on his face was clear for all to see. Within minutes the game was effectively over when Louis Carey was dismissed for his second yellow card, tripping Pugh in full flight. Leeds continued to press, and a third goal arrived in the last minute. Ricketts won the header, Wright’s shot was spilt by the keeper, and Pugh scored from close range for his third of the season. A much needed win for the Whites, and goals to boot. A quick note on former boss Peter Reid – he received a warm welcome for the Elland road faithful, which was nice to see, but it was Kevin Blackwell who went home by far the happier of the two managers.
