Leeds United have moved swiftly to appoint Gary McAllister as manager following the departure of Dennis Wise to Newcastle. Former player, McAllister has previously managed Coventry City before taking a break for personal reasons. The news follows intense speculation throughout the day that saw bets being stopped around mid-morning on him being appointed,

Former Wise has moved to Newcastle of an executive role and assistant Manager, Dave Bassett left the club earlier today it was announced.Rest of the World XIs Gary McAllister signs autographs

McAllister was a firm fans favourite, playing in one of the strongest midfields int he country alongside the likes of Batty and Strachan.  He played for the club for 6 years signing from leicester in 1990 for £1m and went on to make 294 appearances, scoring some 47 goals, including a number of blistering free kicks that became his trademark.

He eventually moved to Coventry for £3m in 1996 before enjoying a short spell at Liverpool before returning to the Sky Blues to take on the role of Player Manager.

In  2003, McAllister stepped down from managerial duties following the announcement his wife had been diagnosed with Breast Cancer and stood down formaly in December of that year.  He has largely been out of the footballing world as he spent time with his wife and children. Sadly his wife, Denise passed away in March 2006 after a 6 year fight against the disease.

He was also awarded an MBE for services to football in 2001.

McAllister will take charge of the game against Tranmere on Saturday and is sure to receive a great reception from the Elland Road faithful - but at the back of everyones mind is whether he has the time and resources to be able to keep the hopes of promotion alive!

no-one has been confirmed as backroom staff as yet.
