Bob Dorrian is right about the paying off of players,one or two would be acceptable,but the amount of players we have paid off is astronomical not least the amount paid on centre forwards who could not score.
Perhaps someone could supply the facts,but it seemed to me the vast majority of players paid off was under the Chris Sutton era.
I do think though we are being prepared for an announcement that Steve Tilsons budget might be less than for Chris Sutton.
There is one point is that we may well be playing in the BSP next season although that would probably mean losing another 6 games( which would 10 on the trot).
Managers should manage but the Board is in charge,and what goes on us down to them

Part of the issue with this is consistency of management. It's hardly surprising that we've paid off that amount of players given the number of managers we've been through over the years.

Every new boss plays his own way and wants to bring in his own players, the merry go round just makes the offloading of players even worse.

The way round this is to stick with Tilson long term, even if that means relegation to the Blue Square this season or even next. If he has time to build a consistent and stable squad then things will improve.

So why pay off Jarrett then? His contract was up in a few months but we paid off early? It was highlighted that it will save us money in the long run but then a few days later Dorrian is saying it is costing us too much!!??

Another case that begs us to ask if our board has a clue?

I think Bob Dorrian was meaning the amount of players that are paid off. I dont know the exact figures of how many we have paid off but it must be in double figures in the last two years.
This mornings Echos suggest that out of the 7 retained players some may go.
I would like to make a some points
1} We do not know which league we will be playing in next year.
and this will have an effect on those players.
2) I wish Bob Dorrian and Chris Travers would keep their opinions until after the season is over. That is when the talking can be done.
3) We have a difficult task in retaining our 2nd Division status,and all the focus should be on that.

"We will break the bank to keep Grimes!"

Sounds like the Bank is already broken. It annoys me when you see a positive headline one day, followed by a negative one shortly after.

Absolutely agree, there isnt any consistency coming out of Sincil Bank. Why speak about Grimes or any of the other players when we are in the middle of a relegation fight.

I try not to criticise too much but Dorrian and Travers had really better get there act together. They are coming across as
bumbling idiots.

I think the reason for the inconsistency is that a manager has paid up a player's contract to save the money but then brings in another player to replace that player....meaning that, for example, if a player's contract runs out in 3 months, we've paid him for those three months and the player replacing him also gets paid for those three months...effectively paying six months worth of wages for just three months worth of player. I think that makes sense.

For example, we got rid of Swaibu but replaced him with Kanyuka, so effectively we're paying two players at the same time, one of whom has been paid up already and the other actually playing and paying.

Some very good points here, especially Nathan's about the Swaibu/Kanyuka situation.

Our last two managers failed dismally, especially when you look at their record in the transfer market, and actually, as much as I despise Chris Sutton, I'd argue that Jackson's record was worse. He was given a huge budget to get the likes of Stefan Oakes and Frank Sinclair, and to be fair, it's hard to think of any signing he made that was good for the club either financially or from a footballing perspective.

We obviously don't know what goes on behind closed doors as regards players' attitude, character etc. but we have paid off a lot of players who have been replaced by ones who aren't any better and that is the frustrating thing both for the supporters and the reason why Dorrian has come out and said what he has said. Here are a few examples;

Richard Butcher - replaced by Josh O'Keefe - very little to choose between them on Butch's form in his second spell
Chris Fagan - replaced by Ben Hutchinson - I actually quite like Hutchinson but Fagan's goals per game record is better.
Jamie Clarke - replaced by Steven Lennon - again, hard to choose between them
Paul Connor - replaced by Drewe Broughton - I'd rather have Connor
Moses Swaibu - replaced by Patrick Kanyuka - Again, Swaibu is probably a better bet
Aaron Brown - replaced by Joe Anderson - have seen nothing to suggest that Anderson is significantly better
Janos Kovacs - replaced by Adam Watts - again, haven't seen much to say that Watts is a lot better

I'm afraid the board should really take most of the blame for the hole in our budget, a hole that will get bigger if the current poor performance of the first team continues and ticket prices remain high. They sanctioned these deals so it's rather pithy to come out and say how frustrating it is when you signed off the blo*dy pay-offs! The board really should hold their hands up and admit that they got it so badly wrong with Chris Sutton, and in giving Peter Jackson an extension to his contract when he didn't deserve one. Those decisions have cost our current manager, a much better manager I might add, to have a budget that will make it extremely difficult to mount a serious promotion challenge.

Another problem is manager who bring in players and then virtually never play them. It's a problem that all of our managers over the last ten years have had, even Keith.

Here is a list of all the players we've had under contract in each of the last five/six years that played less than five games a season during that season or the equivalent of 450 minutes (I'm obviously ignoring the youth players who played before they signed a pro deal).

But the chairman and board would be ridiculed for not backing the manager.....and has been frequently on here

It reminds me of a few years ago when we were going to make a bid for Julian Joachim. Steff Wright asked Deehan how much Joachim was worth and Deehan replied "nothing".....so the bid fell apart and it was Wright who took the flack from it.

The chairman/board aren't there to decide who to buy, they have to trust the manager with the budget......although the board admitted they allowed Sutton to go well over budget.

if a critism is to be levelled at the board it is for allowing managers to go over budget, however, again how many times have people ranted about "speculating and gambling to achieve success"?....the board really are in a no win scenerio....do people think that Portsmouth fans are grateful to Harry for almost sending he club into extinction or do they blame the board?...He asked for money and the board gave him it...or Palace fans to El Tel, or Forrest fans to David Platt?...boards are rounded on by success hungary and a shortism attitude from fans.....maybe as fans some should stop craving instant success and allow a manager time to build a team rather than demanding he be sacked after a bad season!...that in my opinion is the answer to this problem and until fans on here develop patience we will always be in the mess!
