With Chesterfield almost certain to go up and Rotherham chasing automatic promotion, City had little hope for a local derby next season. Howver, without really noticing it, Lincoln could potentially have Sheffield Wednesday as their local derby next season as the Owls become involved in the League One relegation battle.

With Walsall's continued improvement in recent weeks and a 5-2 win at home to Hartlepool after being 2-0 down, Sheffield Wednesday went into their evening away game at Southampton knowing a defeat would see them sit just four points above the relegation zone, a position you don't want to be in given the form of some of the sides below you. Two goals later and Wednesday left the south coast with no points and a nervous look over their should at the drop zone.

There may be four teams between them and the drop zone, but Sheffield Wednesday are now in the relegation battle, whether they want to acknowledge it or not. Most of the teams below them got decent results. Dagenham beat Charlton, Yeovil won at Exeter, Swindon got a good point at Huddersfield, Bristol Rovers won 1-0 at Notts County and Tranmere beat Colchester. Infact, other than Notts County, the only side below Sheffield Wednesday to lose were Plymouth.

The Mariners are now six points from safety and have played more games than virtually all of the teams above them. Swindon sit just above them and Bristol Rovers are another two points ahead. Walsall sit on 39 points, as do Dagenham. Infact, anyone up to 15th placed Oldham could be in for a nervous finish to the season.

Meanwhile, two divisions below and 24 hours ago saw the top two in the Blue Square Premier Division playing each other. AFC Wimbledon's poor recent form was compounded by Crawley as the Sussex club comfortably won 3-1, moving them 9 points clear at the top of the division with four games in hand over Wimbledon. It would take a major collapse to deny Crawley their place in the League now.

Elsewhere only Wrexham also played out of the top five and they faced sixth placed Fleetwood. The Lancashire club beat the Welshmen 1-0 to maintain their Playoff chase, whereas Wrexham continue to sit in the Playoff places without many wins coming their way. Kidderminster didn't play, whereas third placed Luton failed to progress to the final of the FA Trophy at Wembley, drawing 1-1 on the day with Mansfield but losing 2-1 on aggregated.

York also moved into the Playoff chasing pack and sit just four points behind Kidderminster with a game in hand. Rushden, Darlington and Grimsby could yet force their way into the fight, but all have a lot of work to do to make the Playoffs.

We should've been playing them in the Cup this year .... I'll wager John Sheridan is manager there in the summer either way!

If they do go down it serve them right for giving Megson the job!!
County arent safe yet either.
Although the south west clubs still occupy the majority of the places down there.
Not played the wendies since the 70s in the league.
