Reaction from the managers as City beat Southend

Lincoln City's win over Southend took City a step towards safety from relegation and Steve Tilson was delighted, that despite it being against the side that he has supported since he was a child. It was a far from different story for Paul Sturrock though, who was far from amused.

"Apart from it being against Southend it was a big three points for us. We're on 45 points, another five and we should be safe," Steve Tilson told BBC Radio Lincolnshire after the 2-1 win over Southend United. It was a bitter sweet victory for Tilson as he was understandably delighted with the win, but it came against a team who he has supported, played for and managed.

The win was down to two goals from on-loan Ashley Grimes. The Millwall loanee became the first man to reach 15 goals since Ben Wright achieved that amount in 2007/8. He needs eight more goals to surpass Simon Yeo's 23 goals in 2004/5, allowing him to become Lincoln's leading goalscorer for a single season since the turn of the millennium. Whilst Grimes has not ruled out a move to Sincil Bank on a permanent basis, Tilson isn't optimistic of securing his permanent signature.

"I thought we raised our game in the second half, we were excellent in the 15 minutes until they scored which put us on the back foot, but again we took the game to them and I was proud of the lads. Ashley's got 16 goals now in 19 games, his second was a fantastic finish and it was a poacher's goal for the first one. If we can keep him it will be a miracle. I'd love to but I'm sure there will be higher clubs after him."

Southend manager Paul Sturrock was far from pleased though and blamed himself for the defeat.

Speaking to BBC Essex, Sturrock stated "We seemed to dominate long parts of the first half and 20 minutes of the second half. I tend to put a lot of the blame on me, because I went for the win. We're away from home, I maybe should have reined some of them back in rather than attacking."
