Richard Butcher : 1981-2011

Former Lincoln City midfielder Richard Butcher has died at the age of 29. Butcher represented the Imps on three spells that came between 2002 and 2010, his first two spells in particular being very memorable.

Butcher joined the Imps in 2002 after exploiting a clause in his contract at Kettering. He scored some stunning goals and ended his first spell with 11 goals in 104 starts. He left for Oldham before rejoining City on loan. Spells at Peterborough and Notts County followed before joining the Imps for a third time. His third spell didn't go well though and he left on loan to join Keith Alexander at Macclesfield. Butcher was the last man to see Alexander alive before the big man's death in 2010. Butcher would eventually join Macclesfield permanently after being released by the Imps.

His last ever football match came as Macclesfield lost 2-0 at home to Rotherham United.

Richard was 29 at the time of his death, he was due to turn 30 on January 21st.

From a personal point of view, I would just like to say what an excellent human being Butcher was. Not only one of my favourite players of the last ten years, but one of the nicest blokes you could ever hope to meet. He always had time for the fans and he will truly be missed. If indeed there is a heaven, no doubt he and Alexander will be talking tactics and watching their glory days together.

Our thoughts are with his family at this time.
