Lincoln City's general "Go Behind, Stay Behind" trend from recent years continued as despite an excellent first half display, two goals towards of that period ended the game as a contest at Shrewsbury Town. City wasted sveral chances in the first half before the hosts scored twice in quick succession.

The Imps were quickly on the defensive as a corner was gained by the hosts, City however were the ones to see benefit of this as they launched a quick counter attack through Mustapha Carayol, however, his run on goal was blocked by Ian Sharps. Sharps again denied the Imps a few minutes later when he cleared a Hughton ball behind, the corner eventually falling to Carayol who mishit his effort wide of the target.

Another corner followed from a clearance by Cansdell-Sherriff but it came to nothing before Sharps was again a thorn in City's side as he cleared a Watts header following yet another corner. A rare Shrewsbury attack in the 18th minute as they won a corner, although Anyon punched it clear and it lead to another City attack, this time with Carayol trying to find O'Keefe with a through ball, only to have  adefender nip in and intercept the ball.

City came agonisingly close to getting the deserved lead when Keltie's cross was headed against the post by O'Keefe before being cleared for a corner, the corner itself crashed against the opposite post. Another rare Shrewsbury attack saw Harrold have a shot blocked by Anyon but it didn't take long before Shrewsbury gained what was a relatively undeserved opener as O'Keefe cleared a ball with a header but it fell straight to Wright, he took his time and slotted the ball home. It had been Shrewsbury's first shot on target during the game.

Their second shot on target didn't take long in coming as Lionel Ainsworth fed in Jake Robinson, he took his time and hit it, the ball squirming through the fingers of Anyon to give Shrewsbury a 2-0 lead. If it wasn't enough that City were already losing a game that they could easily have been three or four up in, but now City had the task of coming from two goals down to get something, a feat City hadn't managed for quite some time. It was the final noteworthy moment of the first half.

Hutchinson and Raven were booked for an argument with each other and it was Hutchinson who created City's next chance, although his cross was easily cleared. Clapham tried his luck from 25 yards but it went well wide before Kerr was booked for a foul on McAllister.

Much like the first half, City had started the better but Shrewsbury had the second half's first decent chance as he fired just over from 20 yards. McCallum replaced Hutchinson for the Imps, the latter being far from happy with being taken off. Within seconds McCallum had done more than Hutchinson had managed in the first 60 or so minutes, forcing Neal into a save as he turned on the volley.

Anyon tipped a Wright shot over before later hitting the bar. Neither side could find another goal, but fortunately results elsewhere had generally gone for City.
