Outbid by Northampton whose budget was cut by 25%.. Mmmm.

Too be fair though i doubt that 25% was 25% after they let go Akinfenwa. I bet Northampton could still offer Purcell a fair wack.

Their total budget for 10/11 was cut by 25%, We have got some big earners off our wage bill too Heath...

Not necessarily outbid but perhaps he opted for a team that had a late charge towards the play-offs rather than one who finished 20th?

We have paid players off though NS, i still think Northampton would be able to outbid us, unfortunately.

They are a bigger club max when it comes down to it.

I personally don't think N'hampton are a bigger club. Cricket and Rugby take higher importance there.They are geographically better placed but bigger, not sure about that. I would of thought the lure of working with CS might have won it.

Helgy, what's these 'big developments' at City you were alluding too.

The only thing that Northampton have over us is money and that they are on one of the biggest motorways in the country. Their stadium is shite, their fans always seem passionless whenever we go there and I can't imagine it's a great place to play your football

Fanbase means nothing if people don't turn up. I think when trying to prove Bradford weren't a big club some time ago, I compared what population of their city turned up to their games compared to Lincoln's capacity:attendance.....both clubs have roughly the same percentage of their city and surrounding area's population.

The thing is that just because a club is based in a large town/city, it doesn't necessarily mean they'll get big crowds, simply because not everyone in that area will be a football fan, and the likelyhood is that out of every football fan in the town/city. About 70% will have no interest whatsoever in the local team, 10% and the other 20% will only turn up when they're doing well.

If you wanted to look realistically on fanbases then you'd say Lincoln's would be quite large. Other than a few non-league clubs (such as Gainsborough and Boston), we're the only club regularly attended for about an hour in any direction. Meaning effectively we have a fanbase of about 30 miles in each direction.

Compare that to somewhere like Preston for example. Not only is Preston smaller than Lincoln, they have more teams to compete with in their local area, meaning that although they get more fans that ust in effect we have a bigger area fanbase than they do.

Just because Northampton is bigger as a town, doesn't mean that the football club are bigger than Lincoln. I'm not saying that Lincoln is a big club, but in general Northampton aren't a bigger club.

Strange thing about Northampton is that I remember in 2003 they were relegated, in all sorts of financial @#$%&, didn't have a takeover during the summer, didn't sell anyone, etc, they suddenly started spending @#$%& loads of money.

Most of Lincolns population supports a premier team not the local team sadly not enough local pride.
Not from the current imps supporters but from those who would rather support a team from another town.

Agree football isnt the number 1 sport in the town rugby union is.
Definitely a bigger place it has two parliamantary seats.

We can but try to make people more pro their city than some strange town.

Success , ambition, enterprise, good marketing, reasonable ticketing, good football will all inspire fans to attend matches.

David you are right Rugby is much bigger in Northampton than Footy, but we have a greater potential I feel than them. It just needs the right kind of people to prise this potential out.

Regarding Somma, coming to the bank I would be asking every sponsor going to contribute to a 'substantial package for him'- Should he be successful here, then we could have a player on our hands that is worth a lot of money. Seems to me we are about 3/4 players away from having a very good side.Lets hope BD does what he says he was going to do to the Echo and to BBC Lincolnshire.

Maybe we could do something similar to get Somma?
Although I do fear he could go to Swindon after Paynter left there and went to Leeds.

No chance people are bewitched by the premiership you don't see people wearing any LCFC tops in Liverpool or Manchester but you do the other way round.

Somma's not interested in coming here so it does not matter what we do he wants to stay at Leeds unfortunately.

I have not got any big developments but it won't stop any threads about him hopefully he will realise that he aint going to make it their then take our good offer up.

For some it just adds fuel to their fire lol.
Erm let me see you can offer more money than us never about football just the highest payer.

I think it is fair to say that Northampton (on paper) represent a better chance of promotion than we do. Also someone did comment earlier that they made quite a fist of getting into the play-offs whilst the SommaImps scrapped into safety!!
I dont think the money would have been that significant but also Northampton is a stones throw from Luton Airport......cheap flights back to Dublin for the Irishman?? Could have a bearing on it.....Lincoln is hardly the most acessible place is it?

Good shout...there is quite a large Irish contingent in Northampton as well (i know i was the only protestant in a very large Roman Catholic school)
