Wilson Mondo win The Match 4

Wilson Mondo came through two penalty shoot outs to win The Match 4. After several issues that prevented the smooth running of the tournament, the final was fought between the two group winners, with Dave Kirkbright proving the hero as his penalty save proved the difference.

The tournament started off in traditionally frustrating fashion as, despite it being clear that the tournament kicked off at 1pm, several teams were waiting on there full teams to turn up after they were supposed to kick off. The Vodafone team in particular was going to struggle as three of the seven didn't turn up, so they had to beg, steal and borrow from the other teams.

Welton Imps easily got through the group stage, winning all three of their games, the only team in either group to do so. They were joined by Matalan and Diamonds Legends got into the later stages as they beat both Nissionpastas and Vodafone. Vodafone would win the wooden spoon after a comprehensive defeat at the hands of Nissionpastas.

The other group was more keenly fought, although Wilson Mondo's progression was relatively simple with two wins and a draw. Matalan and Diamonds finished bottom of the group, meaning that Peterborough based "Holme Boyz" and Waddo Imps had to fight for the final semi-final place in their final game. Waddo Imps only needed to avoid defeat to go through, but Holme Boyz won by a comprehensive two goals to nil.

The meant that the semis would be Welton Imps vs Holme Boyz and Wilson Mondo vs Matalan and Diamonds Legends. Both games ended 0-0, but Welton Imps and Wilson Mondo both progressed to the final. Matalan and Diamonds Legends finished 3rd after beating Holme Boyz 1-0 in the Playoff.

So we come to the final and after a fiercely contested match, it again went to penalties after a 1-1 draw. Dave Kirkbright, who was later voted Player of the Tournament, saved the first penalty before everyone else scored, meaning the Wilson Mondo won 5-3 on penalties.

Congratulations to Wilson Mondo, whom will turn out to be the last ever The Match winners.

I spoke to Joe just after they left. They (Holme Boyz) really enjoyed their experience and were pleased to have taken part. Is it really the last ever tournament?

Thanks for organising it, Nathan.

As it stands I intend it to be the final one.

I've grown tired of spending months trying to organise it, letting people know the rules and getting them agree to them, only to then whine, @#$%& and complain about them when I get there.

Good Luck, Mr Gorsky

What you need is an assistant. If it could be this same Saturday each year (i.e. end of half-term), I would be only too happy to help you organise it. I would even come along and be a referee on the day. It would be a shame to let it drop.

That's an idea.

I'll probably wait until the New Year to decide either way.

Good Luck, Mr Gorsky
