A loan in review : Davide Somma

As it stands, Davide Somma it set to leave Sincil Bank during this week as his loan spell from Leeds United comes to an end, now we look at whether his loan spell was a success or not, whether we would like him to stay and how we can see his future developing.

Anyone who thinks that Somma hasn't had an impact at Sincil Bank is an idiot. Scoring five goals in five games, his average of a goal every 90 minutes is by far the best average achieved by any City striker throughout their career. The fact he is now our joint top goalscorer after a month says it all about the impact he has had.

There has not been one striker we've had at this club in recent times that has been a more natural goalscorer at Sincil Bank for sometime. People talk about Simon Yeo being a natural goalscorer (conveniently forgetting he only scored one League goal in thirteen months for us at one point), or mention the likes of Jamie Forrester, GTF, Mark Stallard and several others as being a natural finisher, but based on the month that Somma has been at the club, not one of them comes close to Somma's ability.

For me personally, Somma has overtaken the likes of Chris Herd in terms of whom should be City's priority at getting in the summer. I rate Herd extremely highly, but would gladly miss out on him if it meant getting Somma, however, the common denominator that they share is that they are both likely to be extremely expensive.

Therein is the problem. Whereas the fans want Somma, the management want Somma and even Somma might was to come himself, it will get down to the old problem of money. With Somma being out of contract in the summer at Leeds and barely getting a look in there, as well as being 24, he could easily come on a free transfer, but the wages would be extremely high.

With a clearout expected in the summer, a lot of wages are expected to be freed up, but whether we'll have enough to get both Somma and a decent keeper in, is very much up for debate.

Glad he's done well for Lincoln! Anything that puts a nail in Grimsby's coffin is fine with us Leeds fans.

I think Leeds have an option to sign Somma for another year in the summer and I'd be surprised if Grayson doesn't give this some serious consideration. He has always said good things about Somma and he seems far too good for our reserves - hence the loans to Chesterfield and Lincoln.

If we lose against Millwall tonight I think Grayson will recall him. If we win then he'll be yours til the end of the season with a 24 hour recall option.

BTW - his goals and assist look fcking superb on the FL show!

If we do get him it will be on loan after Leeds extend their option.
If he continues to improve under Sutton Leeds are not going to miss out on a fee.

He's a bigger quicker version of GTF/Forrester for me.
Been a revelation hasnt he? 3 goals in 60 before he came.
What was his reserve record like for Leeds this season?
Really hope he stops til end of the season which seems quite likely from what is in the paper today does sound promising.

No question, he has been a huge success and a shame we didnt get him in October!!!

Will we get him in the summer......I doubt it very much, I am sure he would do a job at a league one team and I am sure there are a few teams that have already looked at him.

Somma scored a fair few in our reserves so we knew he was half decent. When he first went out on loan we looked nailed on for promotion.

We now look shot to pieces and any player who has the confidence that Somma has must be a fillip for our team.

I'm sorry guys but if it was up to me Somma would be back at Leeds for the rest of the season.

What an utterly shite team we have turned out to be. The bloddy laughing stock of English football.

AAARRRGGHH!

p.s good luck for the rest of the year - I'll be looking out for your results. Always liked the look of Herd - I had him in my little black book when he was on loan at from Villa at Walsall and looked great then. Pity our scouts never noticed him :-(

Signing a loan extension to season's end....although there's a 24 hour re-call clause.
