It’s that time of the year when Rugby clubs concentrate heavily on securing their core squad for the following season. Rotherham are no different and Head Coach Andre Bester has been very busy in that area of the business this week.

Although at this moment in time Bester refuses to name names, he has given some indication on the numbers that maybe at Rotherham next season. Bester told this site that twelve have already signed for next season, there’s a further nine who he is considering offering contracts to and two players are considering their future in rugby, because of family/career commitments. Although if they decide to stay in rugby, it is likely it will be at Rotherham. Three players have not been offered contracts and a further four players have had their contracts withdrawn. Bester said, “I only want players here at Rotherham who want to play for the club and who are 100% committed to what we are trying to achieve here. “The success that we’ve had this season has been despite the structure not being right and the players have done very well. But next season we will be better, our squad will be better and we want to challenge at the very top of this division.” Bester has already lined up a number of new players which he described as, “Better than we have here at the moment in those positions.” There will no doubt be some player casualties along the way and maybe some of the fans favourites may not be here next season. But Bester is determined to assemble a squad of players that not only want to play their rugby for Rotherham, but who are also capable of achieving Bester’s ultimate target of Premiership rugby.
