"There’s little doubt that Exeter are a better side than Plymouth. We identified it beforehand and said this game was going to be a lot more difficult than last week. They brought their “old” heads back this week and we knew it was going to be tough.

I thought in the first half we were very naïve. We kicked a lot of ball away and we didn’t keep the ball in hand, which put us under pressure. We made two or three massive defensive errors which really could have cost us – in all fairness to them.

Hats off to my guys though, they were camped on our line four or five times in the first half and they couldn’t score. Four or five times they had line outs on our line and they couldn’t score, which in previous years they would have. I was very proud of the guys today!

Second half we knew we had the ammunition to put them back in their half and put the pressure back on them. I asked the players to change tact today because of the wind. We wanted to play for territory. We didn’t play as much running rugby as I’d have liked, but you have to play to the conditions.

After the four tries last week, the most important thing for me this week was to get a win to prove to the players it was not a one off. I felt we won the game up front. We took a lot of their line out ball, we put them under pressure in the scrums, the mauls were 50-50 but we mauled well.

In the context of where we are with this young squad I’d take three out of five every time."

"In the first half hour or so we weren’t at the races. I don’t know what happened; we left it in the changing room. We came out we were frantic, we couldn’t keep the ball, we gave away silly penalties.

They were on the front foot for the first half an hour, and then we had a few harsh words with each other in the last ten minutes of the first half. We settled, we got up into their half – managed to hold on to the ball, put it through a few phases and won a couple of penalties to get back into the game

Those penalties were very crucial; they calmed us down a lot and got us points on the board. We went in at half time knowing we’d have the wind on our backs in the second half. In the first half we were our own worst enemies, we just couldn’t hold on to the ball. Stupid penalties, knock ons, we were just so frantic. We should have just slowed things down and held on to the ball.

We re-grouped in the changing room at half time and turned around with the wind in our backs. Although the wind doesn’t win you games it certainly helped matters. We started to put ball through phases and we were holding onto it a lot better and the try really gave us a boost. The skipper seems to come up with crucial tries – I’m sure we’ll here all about it later on.

The victory today and last week will give us an awful lot of confidence and it shows we can compete with the bigger sides. Looking ahead to Bedford we need to try and keep the momentum going from these last two weeks and put in another strong performance."

“I have to say we played very well, in fact for 60 minutes or so we played some of our best rugby so far this season.

We let them back in to the game in the ten minutes either side of the break when we showed a lack of discipline. The toss was also important as we had to contend with a very stiff breeze in the first half.

The result is, however, tainted by the injury to Tony Rocques which will see him out of action for the rest of the season.

It is very disappointing but our injury tally continues to increase.”
