When asked about signing the young, but prolific goal-scoring, striker earlier today Wenger admitted: "Defoe is one of the targets, yes."

Although Defoe has been targetted, it is unlikely that a move for the player will be made before the summer.

directed towards reports suggesting that Arsenal had already made a bid, he added : "The valuation is £8million and I would have offered £5 million? That's not true.

"I have offered nothing for Defoe as we were not in for him. I like him as a player but I think West Ham cannot let him go now."

Wenger also ruled out a move for Henrik Larsson, even though he is leaving Scottish giants Celtic this summer.

"He's a good player but he's not the youngest any more. He's a short-term buy and I don't want to buy strikers over 30," insisted Wenger.
