SCOTTISH midfielder Barry Ferguson will be out for the rest of the season after he fractured his knee cap in Blackburn Rovers' 1-0 win over Newcastle United on Sunday. In the 28th minute the former Rangers star sustained teh injury after a clash with Gary Speed. He was rushed to hospital where the fracture was confirmed.

Blacburn manager Graeme Souness admitted the news was a huge blow for his side who have not been firing on all cylinders so far this season.

"If you've watched us over the last few weeks, he's been our outstanding player and it's a real blow to lose him," he said after the match.

"He's in hospital, we're going to go and pick him up on the way back and he'll have it all wired up. That's a blow to us given that we don't carry a great big squad.

"It was an innocuous challenge - I think he's the one who's making the challenge. That just shows you, with the pace of our game, if you get it wrong at all, you're risking everything."
