United winger Cristiano Ronaldo has emerged as a major doubt for Portugal's World Cup quarter-final against England.

The 21-year-old, recently linked with a move to Real Madrid, picked up a thigh injury during his country's second round win over the Netherlands, and he missed training on Friday, only one day before the two teams meet in Gelsenkirchen.

"We don't know about Ronaldo. We're still awaiting word on his fitness." said the Portugal coach.

"I'll decide if he plays just a couple of hours before the game."

Portugal are already without Costinha and Deco through suspension.
