Speculation is mounting linking Sir Alex Ferguson with the Republic of Ireland job. Brian Kerr looks set to be sacked after failing to lead the Irish to the World Cup, and the press are claiming that former United hero Denis Irwin has inside information about Ferguson's future.

Increasing speculation suggests that Sir Alex Ferguson could make a shock job move and become the next manager of the Republic of Ireland. Current incumbent Brian Kerr looks set for the chop after the Irish so narrowly missed out on a place in the World Cup finals, and the United boss has emerged as a candidate to become his successor.

The media are stating that former Red Devils favourite Denis Irwin has revealed talks between the Irish FA and Sir Alex are ongoing. The former Ireland full-back allegedly believes that Ferguson could finish his career in the Emerald Isle after almost 20 years in Lancashire.

"My very reliable sources say there has been contact between the FAI and my old boss. Of course he's denying it, he's under contract to United, but that doesn't mean he won't be Republic manager when our next competitive games come round." said Irwin, claim the tabloid press.

"He would be a brilliant choice. Alex would never manage England, so Ireland, a country and people he knows well, would be the one for him."

Ireland came so close to qualifying for the finals in Germany, but failing to beat Switzerland in their final game cost them dear. Despite losing only one game throughout the qualification campaign, Kerr's job hangs in the balance and the Irish media are short listing possible replacements. As a Glasgow Rangers fan and former player, Fergie's name is a surprise inclusion though his credentials are tremendous.

The 63-year-old has always said his managerial career will end at United, and recently told supporters: "When I'm finished here, I'm finished. Believe me, you don't leave Manchester United and go anywhere else, club or country."

Fergie's achievements with United have made him the most successful football manager of all time, whilst he has also managed East Stirlingshire, St.Mirren, Aberdeen and even a brief stint with the Scottish national side during an illustrious career. Would he risk a legacy of eight Premiership titles, five F.A Cups, a European Cup, a League Cup, two Cup Winners' Cups, an Intercontinental Cup, a European Super Cup, three Scottish league titles, four Scottish Cups and a Scottish League Cup for a new venture?
