Former Manchester United striker Diego Forlan admits it will be a special night when his current club, Villarreal, face the Red Devils in the Champions League.

Forlan spent an unsuccessful spell at Old Trafford following his eagerly anticipated £7.5 million move from Argentine outfit Independiente but proved a popular figure to fans and players alike.

The Uruguay international produced the goals when given a run in the side, famously netting in big games against Liverpool in the Premiership and Rangers in the Champions League.

Forlan pleaded for more first-team chances but was denied by Sir Alex Ferguson. He then moved to Villarreal last summer and ended up as La Liga's top goalscorer and one of the most deadliest strikers in Europe.

"It will be very special to face United," he said after Villarreal were picked in the same Champions League group as United. "I have many friends there but nobody doubts I am going there to try and win.

"I don't have anything to prove that I'm a real professional. I know a lot of people won't believe me when I say this, but I really enjoyed being part of the United family."
