Former Manchester United striker Diego Forlan has paid homage to Sir Alex Ferguson, claiming he wouldn't be the star he is for Villarreal without the Scotsman's guidance.

The Uruguay international, signed by United for £7.5 million from Independiente in 2002, left Old Trafford last summer for around £2 million and has proved the bargain of the season for Villarreal.

Forlan, along with Thierry Henry, was award the European Golden Boot for his potency in La Liga, netting 25 goals to help his side into the Champions League.

The 25-year-old could face United next season in Europe and would relish the opportunity. "If Manchester United could appear at the El Madrigal it would be a fantastic experience for me. I respect all teams, but Manchester United is a very, very big club," he said 

"I'll never forget Sir Alex Ferguson," the South American added.

"His name is synonymous with Manchester United. Despite the fact that it's such a huge club, it is also a family.

"I know a lot of people won't believe me when I say this, but I really enjoyed being part of the United family. Everyone is very close-knit. 

"I know that I am going to go back to England one day and I would like it to be to United."
