Cambridge United boss Steve Thompson has revealed that there are a number of Premiership teams in the running to capture the signature of highly-rated goalkeeper John Ruddy, including Arsenal and Newcastle United.

United are believed to be on the hunt for a new man in-between the sticks after a number of costly blunders made by Roy Carroll and Tim Howard over the past few months and Ruddy could potentially be Old Trafford's Number 1.

The 18-year old impressed on a 2 week trial that got extended with The Red Devils and also featured in a reserve game.

Newly appointed Cambridge boss Steve Thompson stated: "There is a distinct lack of quality English keepers around at present and John has all the ingredients needed to fit the bill in The Premiership,"

"Arsenal want to take him on trial now and Newcastle are also extremely interested."

"But I have been told by Manchester United that they were very impressed with John after he played a trial game for them. I'll await developments."
