Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo and his Portuguese team-mates yesterday made it through to the quarter-finals of Euro 2004 by beating rivals Spain 1-0. A single goal from Nuno Gomes was enough to knock-out Spain and send the home nation through. Hobbs in Trouble

Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo and his Portuguese team-mates yesterday made it through to the quarter-finals of Euro 2004 by beating rivals Spain 1-0.

A single second-half goal from Nuno Gomes was enough to knock-out underachieving Spain and send the home nation through.

"We are just glad we are through." admitted the former Sporting Lisbon teenager.

"I don't really know if I would prefer to play Croatia or England, but I do know that whoever we play we will have to produce another big performance like we did against Spain to win." he continued

"I feel I have had two good performances as a substitute, and I was very happy to have the faith and confidence of the coach to start the game," 

"It was a great victory against a powerful side and hopefully we can now go far in this tournament."

Ronaldo, 19, started the game and was looked incredibly threatening down the wing and proved a potent threat. Luiz Scolari's Portugal now join the Czech Republic in the quarter-final.
