Manchester United boss Sir Alex Fergsuon has admitted that defender Wes Brown needs a summer rest and has asked England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson to leave him out of his Euro 2004 squad. Manchester United boss Sir Alex Fergsuon has admitted that defender Wes Brown needs a summer rest and has asked England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson to leave him out of his Euro 2004 squad.

The 24-year old's career has been plagued with injuries and has only recently got back into action after missing the start of the season with a broken ankle.

Despite a patchy re-start, Brown has managed to put in some impressive performances of late- so impressive that people have been saying he's now good enough for a place in Sven-Goran Eriksson's Euro 2004 squad after Gareth Southgate is now a doubt due to injury and Rio Ferdinand's ban.

"The people who are now saying Wes should go to Euro 2004 are the same as those that were slaughtering the guy and saying he was finished," said Sir Alex Ferguson.

"I made my point about Wes last week, he is one of the best natural defenders in the country and my opinion hasn't changed." he continued.

"I think he needs a break. He's come through an awful lot this season."

"It is not easy at his age to comeback from two cruciate injuries and a broken ankle. People seemed to forget that when they saw his recent performances."
