PSV desperately wanted to keep the 20-year old prodigy and were oh so close to completing a deal with Manchester United but Chelsea stepped in at the last minute and stroked up a deal with the Eindhoven club.

"Arjen is a top quality player who will become a major asset for our club in the years ahead." said Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon, who is thought to be a Judas for taking Roman Abramovich's millions and ditch his chief executive post at United for Chelsea.

The attacking midfielder has scored 16 goals in 48 appearances for PSV and is a vital member of Dick Advocaat's Dutch team
