Manchester United are set to finally offload out-of-favor goalkeeper Fabien Barthez as soon as the transfer window opens in January. Manchester United are set to finally offload out-of-favor French goalkeeper Fabien Barthez as soon as the transfer window opens in January.

The eccentric World Cup winner has been a forgotten man since the arrival of American Tim Howard and Sir Alex Ferguson favors Roy Carroll as No.2 rather than Barthez.

"We are going to try to sign him as soon as possible," said Marseille director Christophe Bouchet.

Barthez commented on the move, saying:  "From the moment I learned Manchester and Marseille were talking I was in quite a rush to come here," he said

"Marseille are a special club for me. I really started out here. My wish was to play for Marseille." he added.

The reason why Barthez is so eager to move is not to lose his place in the French national team. Euro 2004 is looming and Barthez wants to be France's No.1.
