The deal is for 4 years and is an extension of the current Vodafone deal that expires in May. The phone giants have sponsored since 2000.

United chief executive David Gill announced the deal this morning, saying: "We are delighted to continue our sponsorship with Vodafone."

Gill also went onto explain that there has been no approach from Malcolm Glazer to take over Manchester United. Glazer owns the Tamper Bay Buccaneers, an American football team and has increased his steak in Manchester United PLC to just under 15%.

"We had a good long period with Malcolm Glazer and his two sons. It was an excellent meeting. We talked a lot about what we can achieve and how we can do that. It was very positive. They asked us questions and gave us an insight into some of their business interests." said Gill

"He has invested in the shares at the moment and sees it as a good investment. That was the end of the discussion. There has been no discussion about his intentions for the future."
