It is believed that Hughes will soon leave the Welsh managerial post following the Dragons' failure to qualify for the finals of the European Championships', but Sir Alex believes that his former player will be looking to become a club manager instead of an assistant.

"Mark has done a fantastic job for Wales and he may stay on there," said Ferguson.

"I think that if he decides to step down it will because he wants a job in club management.

"I don't think he wants to be a No.2. He is too used to being his own man and it's clear he'd like to be a manager in his own right."

Rumours are circulating that Hughes could be lined up as the next Leeds United or Tottenham Hotspur boss, but despite that Ferguson says a move to Old Trafford would surely be tempting for the 40-year-old. Hughes had two excellent spells at United, and is adored by the fans. A move as assistant would probably mean him succeeding Ferguson when he decides to retire, and therefore is an option he may find difficult to turn down.
