Roeder Rejects Defoe Rumours

Defoe had been linked with a £10million move to Old Trafford in the press over the weekend, with one paper even reporting that the England Under-21 international had already bought a home in Manchester.

Roeder has denied contact with the Premiership champions, and has underlined the importance that Defoe will have upon West Ham's promotion charge next season.

Roeder also believes Defoe will form a formidable partnership with new signing David Connolly.

"I have seen all the speculation myself and it is always disappointing when this is started in the media - all I would say is that I would not encourage it," said the Hammers boss.

"I see Jermain Defoe as a very important member of the team this year.

"I believe that him, David Connolly, and the striker that we will bring in hopefully over the next few days will have many, many goals in them to help us gain promotion.

"So I need to say very quickly to try and squash this speculation that I would not encourage a move from Manchester United - or any other club."
