Former top-flight manager Neil Warnock believes new Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has a “lot to do” if he is to help his new club challenge for Premier League honours in his first season at the helm.

Mourinho has made wholesale changes to the United squad over the summer months, including the signings of Paul Pogba and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

However, Warnock has fallen short of suggesting United will win the Premier League title this season, instead suggesting cross-city rivals City are “going to walk the league”. He also believes bitter foes Liverpool will head into the season "a lot more optimistic about the top four."

Speaking to the Metro, Warnock added: “The new guy at Chelsea, I really like Conte, he’s a good manager – same as Mourinho. But both those lads have a lot to do with the squads that they’ve got.”

67-year-old Warnock most recently managed Rotherham United.

In a managerial career spanning some three-and-a-half decades, he has also taken charge of Gainsborough Trinity, Burton Albion, Scarborough, Notts County, Torquay United, Huddersfield Town, Plymouth Argyle, Oldham Athletic, Bury, Sheffield United, Crystal Palace, Queens Park Rangers and Leeds United.
