Ex-United man back in senior management

Rene Meulensteen

Rene Meulensteen, former Manchester United coach, has been named the new manager of Israeli outfit Maccabi Haifa.

The 52-year-old worked at United in a number of roles over two spells, and was regarded by many to have played an influential role in the club’s success.

Charged with youth team, reserve team and assistant manager roles, Meulensteen most recently left Old Trafford in June 2013 following the arrival of David Moyes.

Jaunts into management, thus far, have proven frustrating. He spent only six months at Brøndby IF between two spells at United; and was sacked after only 16 days in charge of FC Anzhi Makhachkala.

He became Fulham boss in late 2013, stepping up from head coach following the sacking of Martin Jol. However, he spent only a number of weeks at the helm, before Felix Magath arrived at Craven Cottage.

Meulensteen joins the Israeli Premier League, hoping to improve on their fourth-placed finish last season.
