Community Shield winners

Jose Mourinho’s first competitive game in charge of the club ended in silverware success, with a 2-1 win at Wembley over Leicester for the Community Shield.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic marked his first appearance for the club with a winning header, as United edged a tight contest against the shock Premier League champions.

Jesse Lingard, having grabbed the winning goal in the FA Cup final, opened the scoring in the first-half with a stunning strike, as he charged forward 40 yards, eluding the tackle of four Foxes players before dispatching a stunning finish.

However, sloppy defensive work from Marouane Fellaini gifted Jamie Vardy the chance to restore parity, which he took shortly after the interval.

United's Swedish target man settled the contest, and ensured the Shield would not be decided from the penalty spot. He rose highest to skilfully nod home Antonio Valencia's cross, to the delight of the Red Army.

Mourinho’s men have now had their hands on the Shield 21 times, including 17 outright wins – six more than nearest challengers Liverpool. United’s new boss will be very pleased to kick-off his reign with silverware; though it does draw parallels with how David Moyes kicked-off his tenure...!

Premier League action next, and a Sunday trip to AFC Bournemouth in a 2pm kick-off.
