Manchester United have been linked with an unlikely January move for Roma left-back Ashley Cole; with the former Chelsea and Arsenal man firmly out of contention at the Stadio Olimpico club.

With Luke Shaw still recovering from a broken leg, speculation has suggested that Louis van Gaal is considering gambling on a short-term offer for Cole in the New Year.

Cole swapped the Premier League for Serie A in 2014 – but has had a deeply challenging spell at Roma.

The player is yet to make an appearance for the Rome club this season and, bizarrely, was even cropped out of a photograph by the club showing he and Mohammed Salah in the treatment room.

Reports in The Sun on Sunday claim United could now offer Cole a short-term return to the Premier League as the injury-hit Red Devils look to bolster their defensive options.

Having not made a senior appearance since March, and with a switch to Major League Soccer rumoured to be a possible avenue for Cole,The Sun on Sunday’s speculation does seem, however, unlikely to come to fruition.
