Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has ruled out a top four finish for his side, as Manchester United stand on the brink of a Champions League return. 

United, currently third, boast an right-point lead over the fifth-placed Scousers. The resurgent Red Devils left Liverpool with a mountain to climb following the recent win at Anfield, and Arsenal heaped further misery on the club on Saturday.

Rodgers has now ruled out qualification for Europe's lead competition, as United excitedly look forward to an increasingly likely return to the tournament they won in 1968, 1999 and 2008.

"We very much won't be in the top four," said Rodgers.

"There's too much ground to make up. We have been dealt two big blows in our last two games".

He added: "Now we most focus on the FA Cup."

Louis van Gaal's men will slip back to fourth in the table should cross-city rivals City avoid defeat against Crystal Palace on Easter Monday evening.
