Top four target

Juan Mata believes Manchester United's primary goal this season should be to qualify for the Uefa Champions League.

The Red Devils will not be involved in European football this season following a disappointing campaign last term, finishing seventh in the Premier League.

Confidence amongst many supporters is high following Louis van Gaal's arrival and a successful pre-season campaign, but United's former Chelsea midfielder has said a top four finish is the main aim.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, the 26-year-old said: "We would all love to win the league but the most important goal - what this club needs - is to play in the Champions League again.

"I cannot imagine a Champions League two years in a row without United."

With European football off the table, van Gaal will hopefully launch a three-pronged charge on domestic competitions this season, with the new league campaign getting underway against Swansea City on Saturday.
