Patrice Evra put United in front in the second half with a rocket of a shot but the lead lasted for only 22 seconds as the hosts immediatelt struck back and they then powered to a 3-1 win on the night, giving them a 4-2 win overall. 

United now face the prospect of not playing Champions League football for the first time since 1996 and could have their first season without European football of any kind since 1989-90. 

There was no lack of effort from the team but in the end they were beaten by a better team who now must be favourites to lift the trophy ahead of Real Madrid, Athletico Madrid and Chelsea who make up the other semi final places. 

It has been a wretched season for United and the club now need to rebuild for the future. David Moyes has a big job on his hands and the board will need to back him with substantial funds if the club are going to compete with their domestic rivals - all of whom have got stronger in recent years.
