Rooney: United 'ready for the challenge'

After producing a fine performance and landmark goal that helped Manchester United to a fifth successive win, frontman Wayne Rooney believes his side may "surprise" people this season.

After 15 league games, United boasted their worst record since 2001. However, successive top-flight wins over Aston Villa, West Ham United and Hull have done much to boost confidence at the Theatre of Dreams.

A superb effort from Rooney, his 150th league goal for United, helped secure a 3-2 comeback win at Hull on Boxing Day, and the England striker has suggested there could be much more to come from the Red Devils.

"We had some poor results at the start of the season, but we are fighting now," he said.

"We're ready for the challenge and we might surprise a few people."

Rooney has 11 goals to his name this season, and his form has been absolutely crucial for United. Speculation, however, remains concerning his longer-term future at the club.
