Federico Macheda has cut short a loan spell at Doncaster Rovers due to a hamstring injury.

The forward agreed to join the Yorkshire outfit in mid-September - and has bagged three goals in five appearances with the Championship club.

Out of first-team contention at Old Trafford, Macheda will have been looking to prove a point to new United manager David Moyes at the Keepmoat Stadium, or at least impress potential suitors.

After making his Doncaster debut as a substitute at Wolves, he bagged a brace against Nottingham Forest before scoring the only goal of the game as his new club won 1-0 against rivals Sheffield Wednesday.

The player has returned to Old Trafford to undergo treatment for a hamstring problem. However, Donny boss Paul Dickov told the club’s website that his club are “still looking at extending his deal” and “hope to have him back soon”.

Macheda’s last Manchester United appearance came as an extra-time substitute in a 5-4 League Cup defeat at Chelsea in October 2012.
