Superb save!

Peter Schmeichel has labeled David De Gea's superb first-half save at Sunderland as one of the greatest in the history of the Premier League.

The one-handed stop from the Spaniard denied Emanuele Giaccherini a headed goal and stopped the Black Cats taking a two-goal lead.

Arguably, De Gea's heroics kept David Moyes’ men in the contest. The hosts had enjoyed a stronger opening period but, buoyed by De Gea's great save, United staged an impressive comeback thanks to two fine goals from Adnan Januzaj.

It is alleged by many that an FA Cup goal from Mark Robins against Nottingham Forest kept Sir Alex Ferguson in a job. Of course, it would be utterly ridiculous to draw any parallels here – but De Gea’s save has helped relieve pressure on Moyes following a difficult start to life in the Old Trafford hot-seat.

Though Januzaj's goalscoring heroics grabbed most of the headlines, Schmeichel believes De Gea's save was something to savour.

Speaking on Sky Sports, the Dane said: "It’s one of the best saves I’ve seen in the Premier League.

"He has to adjust his feet and it’s at a really difficult height as he has to dive upwards. It’s just a wonderful save – one we’ll see time and time again.

"He’s kept the team in the game."

22-year-old De Gea has been ever-present for United this season, picking up four clean sheets from 11 outings to date.
