Ten unbeaten in the league as United beat Scousers

MUFC 2-1 Scousers

Manchester United claimed a crucial 2-1 victory over bitter rivals Liverpool at Old Trafford, opening up an incredible 24 point Premier League lead over the Scousers. Robin van Persie and Nemanja Vidic were on target for the Red Devils as they retained a seven-point lead at the top of the table.

Robin van Persie was on superb form once again – scoring the first and creating the second as United claimed a fifth successive home win over their Merseyside foes.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s side dominated the opening period and took the lead as the free-scoring Dutch striker put the finishing touch on a fine attacking move, turning home Patrice Evra’s cross.

Danny Welbeck started up front alongside RVP – and won many plaudits for an energetic display, though his finishing looked somewhat wayward.

United doubled their lead on 54 minutes. Van Persie’s free-kick was headed towards goal by Evra and brushed off Vidic before finding its way beyond the reach of Pepe Reina.

However, the travelling Scousers found a way back into the game three minutes later as January acquisition Daniel Sturridge pounced on the loose ball after David De Gea blocked Steven Gerrard’s effort.

United, having dominated the game for long periods, finished the game hanging onto their narrow lead as Liverpool produced a vastly improved second-half display. Fortunately, we held on and have now gone ten Premier League outings without defeat.

As an aside, hundreds of United fans were bizarrely decked out in ‘joint scarves’ at the game – boasting both United and Liverpool’s name and crest. These were flying off the stalls prior to kick-off and after the game – but why on Earth are people buying these?

Attention now turns to FA Cup action as United entertain West Ham in a crucial third round replay, with the Red Devils aiming to maintain their silverware challenge on three fronts.
